Bar length is the message. Cutting the axis exaggerates every difference.
Sort by value
Alphabetical order scatters the story. Sorting puts the answer at the top.
Whole periods only
A part-month always looks like a collapse. Cut it or mark it partial.
Always compare
Last year, a target or last period. A number alone cannot be judged.
One colour, one highlight
Six colours make the reader decode before they can read.
Pies for two or three slices
Beyond that, people cannot rank by angle. Use bars.
