How to Chase a Number That Moved
Slice one dimension at a time
Break the total down by each dimension in turn and look for the one where a single value carries most of the change.
Compare the share, not the size
The biggest category usually has the biggest fall in pounds. Look at which one fell most as a share of itself.
Then slice again inside it
Once you have the dimension, slice within that value to find the detail: one region, one week, one account.
Say what would change your mind
If a second dimension explains it equally well, you have found a correlation, not a cause.
