  • Data engineering and IT

Definition

A join that returns only the rows that have a match in both tables. Rows without a match on either side are left out.

Example

Raket Parts B.V. received 328 enquiries in 2025; 159 of them received a quote. An inner join of enquiries to quotes returns 159 rows. The 169 enquiries with no quote drop out without warning, so always compare row counts before and after.

Raket Parts B.V. is a fictional company created for Insyt.

Why it matters

It is the default join in most SQL tools, so knowing that it drops unmatched rows prevents silent gaps in reports.

Where it is used

SQL queries and BI models. Used by data analysts, BI developers and data engineers.
