Relationship
Scatterplot with regression line
Overlays a specified regression model on paired numeric observations.
- Plot
- Relationship
- Model fit
What it answers
What relationship does the fitted model estimate?
- Shape
- XY points and fitted line
- What it shows
- Estimated direction, strength and departures from fit.
Example
The question
How much do weekly sales rise with each extra thousand spent on ads?
Ad spend and weekly sales, with fitted line (illustrative)
Illustrative data. It belongs to no company.
When to use it
Use it when
Showing a specified fitted relationship.
Avoid it when
When extrapolation or causal interpretation is unsupported.
How to read it
Compare observed points with the regression line and inspect residual variation.
Note
State the model and any interval shown.
The data you need
- Layout
- Long table
- Fields
- X: number; Y: number
- One row is
- One observation with paired numeric measurements. What is the grain?
- Rules
- X and Y must refer to the same observation. Do not independently sort either column.
- Optional
- Optional ID,Group,Weight. Binning and smoothing settings belong to chart configuration.
- Preparation
- Fit the specified regression using appropriate observations and diagnostics; render its predictions and any valid intervals.
- Units
- State the unit of every coordinate/variable. A unitless transformed or standardised scale must be identified; no common denominator is assumed.
Worked example
Points(1,2),(2,4),(3,6). A least-squares line is Y=2X and fits these toy points exactly; real model validation requires more data.
| X | Y |
|---|---|
| 2 | 10 |
| 4 | 100 |
| 6 | 50 |
