Compare and rank

Small multiples

  • Compare and rank

What it shows

A grid of small charts with the same scale, one per group.

When to use it

Use it when

Comparing patterns across many regions or products.

Avoid it when

There are only one or two groups.

When to use it

Use repeated small charts to compare the same measure across groups while preserving each group’s shape.

Worked example

Plot monthly revenue for four regions in four line panels, with the same 12 months and a shared y-axis scale.

Data required

Consistent metric, time axis and scale; manageable number of panels; clear group headings.

Checks and common mistakes

A different y-axis range in each panel can make changes look similar when magnitudes differ. Check legibility on phones and supply a data table.

More accessible alternative

For many groups, show top examples plus an interactive filter or a ranked table.
