  • Numbers and measures

Definition

A smaller group taken from a population and used to learn about the whole. It is used when measuring everyone is impossible or impractical. A sample only tells you about the population if it was chosen fairly.

Example

If Liberty Orbit surveys 200 of its 5,100 farm customers, the 200 are the sample. The 5,100 are the population.

Liberty Orbit Inc. is a fictional company created for Insyt.
